Citizens have come together around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to review the provisions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate involved in the talks revealed that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.

The source said the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the agreement.

He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies provision
  • Future management of the region

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive are released no one will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester a participant remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the captives to return. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that about 70% of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of the gathering, grieving people came together to pay their respects.

From there, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the evening arrives, the dread arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, particularly my youngest child who places his head on me the entire evening."

"Every second we check the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had taken in the remains of several people by the midday, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated another two dead people had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south region, medics reported.

The region's health ministry announced twenty-five of the {territ
