The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
