The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is developed, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
