Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized the former governor, calling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams made a U-turn, stating he now plans to appear with Cuomo in areas where he holds significant backing.
“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how vital this race is,” Adams stated.
He added, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.
Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams responded to journalists asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”
The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
