A Danish citizen has been convicted of uploading sexually explicit scenes from copyrighted movies and television shows on the online platform Reddit.

According to a law enforcement document reviewed by media outlets, the unnamed individual posted 347 clips of explicit scenes in a Reddit group he moderated, which were then watched 4.2 million times.

The country's authorities confirm he has been handed a seven-month suspended sentence for violating copyright laws.

Experts explain the man was prosecuted under a seldom-invoked provision in Denmark's intellectual property legislation, with the judge finding that by removing the scenes out of their intended setting, the accused had harmed the performers' "moral rights".

He has additionally been found guilty of sharing more than 25 terabytes of copyrighted data.

From March 2022 to mid-2023, the user known as "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit uploaded adult clips featuring over 100 actresses.

He distributed them in the forum he was a moderator of.

Per the Denmark's anti-piracy group The Rights Alliance (TRA), his online community had more than 6,000 members and users were prompted to request clips of particular performers.

In last year, campaigners reported the incident to the authorities on behalf of the impacted artists, filmmakers and producers, which resulted in the subreddit being closed down.

One actress, one of the actresses whose nude content were shared in the community, told Danish broadcasters at the period she believed there was a distinction between appearing naked in a movie and being shown on Reddit.

The performer stated the uploads constituted "exploitation".

'A significant message'

The defendant was arrested in fall 2024 and pleaded culpable to the allegations recently.

In a comment after the verdict, TRA head the organization's leader said the decision sent an "important" message "that violations of creators' entitlements has consequences".

The ruling is viewed as unique in Denmark for its use of the "moral rights" section of the national copyright law, which states an artist's work cannot be utilized in a manner which infringes upon their standing.

Intellectual property specialist Dr Alina Trapova told the media the case was "unusual" for its emphasis on the harm to the integrity of an performer, rather than to them financially.

The extent to which the ruling could influence other countries is uncertain.

But she said there may be "more and more of these actions" in the coming years with the growth of AI, where "the sanctity of one's work might be tempered with much more easily".
