Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Manchester City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled recent talk connecting him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The 45-year-old, who once served as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the persistent rumours surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, is under contract running until 2029, with a possible extension available.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions Following Recent Remarks
Maresca's latest statement follow after he referred to a recent 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those original remarks had sparked considerable speculation of a possible rift between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When asked if he had since spoken with the club's leadership, Maresca replied, "We are in the same building, so we speak about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would definitely remain at the club for the coming campaign and urged the fans to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca revealed that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, potentially in contention for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The apparent strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy persists as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the matter in the open, there has also been no resolution offered, creating the disagreement unresolved.
The atmosphere during the manager's media briefings has grown notably strained, leading to fears it could undermine what has otherwise been a promising beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's on-field situation is strong: they are fourth in the league, have reached the League Cup last four, and can secure a favourable Champions League draw with strong results in their final games.
