A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had increased to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A bill presented on the start of the week would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting arena.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
