Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.
International terrorist designation and legal charges
Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.
German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.
Trial details and international connections
The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.
Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.
Regional context and group hierarchy
Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.
Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.
Prior legal cases and global responses
A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.
“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
