A Devastating Transformation Only 12 Months Has Caused in the US

In late October 2024, the situation was completely distinct. Ahead of the national election, thoughtful Americans could admit the country's serious imperfections – its unfairness and imbalance – however they continued to identify it as America. A democratic nation. A place where constitutional order meant something. A state headed by a respectable and upright leader, even with his older age and increasing frailty.

Currently, this autumn, numerous citizens hardly identify the nation we reside in. People suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and shoved into vehicles, occasionally refused legal rights. The eastern section of the White House – is being destroyed for a grotesque ballroom. The leader is harassing his opponents or supposed enemies and demanding the justice department transfer an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Soldiers with weapons are dispatched into American cities under fabricated reasons. The Pentagon, renamed the War Department, has – in effect – freed itself of regular press examination as it spends what could amount to almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Universities, legal practices, journalism organizations are yielding under the president’s threats, and wealthy elites are regarded as members of the royal family.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the limit into autocracy and totalitarianism,” an American historian, stated recently. “Ultimately, swifter than I imagined possible, it did happen in this country.”

One awakes to new horrors. It is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone we are, and how quickly it occurred.

Nevertheless, it is known that the leader was legitimately chosen. Even after his deeply disturbing initial presidency and despite the warnings that came with the knowledge of the conservative plan – despite Trump himself stated openly he intended to be a dictator solely at the start – sufficient voters selected him rather than the other candidate.

While alarming as the present situation are, it's more daunting to understand that we are just nine months into this administration. Where will another 36 months of this deterioration position us? And if that period transforms into a more extended duration, because there is not anyone to restrain this ruler from deciding that additional tenure is essential, possibly for security concerns?

Granted, there is still hope. There are congressional elections next year which might establish an alternate balance of power, in case Democrats regain the Senate or House of parliament. There are elected officials who are attempting to exert a degree of oversight, like representatives who are initiating an inquiry concerning the try to cash appropriation from legal authorities.

And a national vote three years from now could begin us down the road to healing just as the prior selection placed us on this unfortunate course.

There exist millions of Americans demonstrating in public spaces across municipalities, similar to recent last weekend during anti-authority protests.

A former official, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the nation is awakening”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in that decade or during the Vietnam war protests or in the seventies crisis.

During those times, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.

He claims he recognizes the indicators of that awakening and observes it occurring at present. For proof, he points to the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, multi-faction opposition against a broadcaster's firing and the largely united defiance by media to agree to the defense department’s demands they solely cover approved content.

“The slumbering entity consistently stays inactive before specific greed becomes so noxious, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, some brutality so disruptive, that the giant has no choice except to rise.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

At the same time, the big questions remain: can America ever recover? Can it retrieve its position globally and its commitment to constitutional order?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project succeeded temporarily, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My pessimistic brain suggests that the final scenario is correct; that all may indeed be gone. My optimistic spirit, however, convinces me that we need to strive, through all methods possible.

Personally, working in journalism analysis, that involves urging journalists to commit, more completely, to their mission of overseeing leadership. For some people, it might involve working on congressional campaigns, or planning demonstrations, or finding ways to protect electoral access.

Less than a year ago, we lived in a very different place. In the future? Or after another term? The reality is, we are uncertain. All we can do is to attempt to continue fighting.
